Gen. Won, ROK CJCS, meets CDR, U.S. INDOPACOM
Gen. Won met with Adm. John C. Aquilino in the morning of June 3, and discussed about the security trend on the Korean Peninsula and measures to enhance mutual cooperation.
Adm. Aquilino reiterated that the ROK-U.S. Alliance is the linchpin of regional peace and prosperity and that he will continue to closely cooperate to develop a even more steadfast ROK-U.S. Alliance in a future-oriented manner.
Gen. Won highlighted the importance of retaining a steadfast ROK-U.S. Alliance and robust combined defense posture.
Gen. Won and Adm. Aquilino agreed to provide military support to the diplomatic efforts of the two governments for complete denuclearization and the settlement of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Adm. Aquilino’s visit to Korea was made with the intention to strengthen the ties with major allies in the Indo-Pacific region through his first international trip after his inauguration on the 30th of April.

○Chairman of the Republic of Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Kim Seung Kyum, had a trilateral meeting at Camp Smith, Hawaii with Chairman of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley, Japan Chief of Staff, Joint Staff, Gen. Yoshida Yoshihide . ○U.S. Indo-Pacific Command Commander Adm. John C. Aquilino, United Nations Command/Combined Forces Command/U.S. Forces Korea commander Gen. Paul J. LaCamera, and U.S. Forces Japan/Fifth Air Force commander Lt. Gen. Ricky N. Rupp also attended. ○This session featured discussions on regional security challenges, to include the DPRK’s destabilizing activities and opportunities for increased trilateral cooperation toward maintaining peace and stability in the region.Gen. Milley reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to defend the Republic of Korea and Japan. ○The conclusion of the meeting coincided with another ICBM-class ballistic missile launch by the DPRK, in violation of unanimously approved UN Security Council resolutions. ○ On 12-13 June in Seoul, ROK JCS hosted the 2nd ROK-Saudi Arabia Military Cooperation Committee* with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia General Staff. Led by Lieutenant General Lee, Youngsu, J5 Chief Director, ROK JCS and Major General Hamed Rafea A. AlAmri, Chief of Staff, Saudi Arabia General Staff as senior representatives, key members participated the meeting. Especially, Saudi Arabia sent a delegation of 20 people including 8 general officers. * Annual consultative body to enhance bilateral military cooperation between ROK JCS-Saudi General Staff ○ This meeting was held for the first time in last 4 years since the 1st Committee held in Saudi Arabia in 2019. The parties had in-depth discussion concerning main agendas such as △security situation assessment △revitalization of military exchange △education and training cooperation △defense cooperation. Lieutenant General Lee, Youngsu, J5 Chief Director emphasized in his opening remarks that, "In line with both governments' pursuit of future-oriented strategic partnership, this meeting is even more meaningful to be held right after the agreement to have a regular defense minister consultative body." ○ Saudi Arabian delegation visited ROKAF Air Defense Missile Command and its subordinate M-SAM battery and had a time to see the defensive readiness posture of ROK Armed Forces and the excellence of K-Defense in person. Major General AlAmri, the senior representative of Saudi Arabia highlighted that "This visit was a meaningful time to understand the gravity of the security situation in the Korean Peninsula and enhance bilateral military and defense cooperation. I am convinced that bilateral military cooperation will continue to be strengthened."

○ Chairman Kim Seung Kyum met with Army General Wayne Eyre, Canada's Chief of Defence Staff, and shared their assessments of the security landscape in the Korean Peninsula and discussed ways to promote military cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. ○ The two military leaders concurred that the Republic of Korea and Canada have strengthened mutual cooperation since bilateral relations were enhanced to a comprehensive strategic partnership, and agreed to further expand the scope of bilateral military and defense industry cooperation for the stability of the Indo-Pacific region. ○ Chairman Kim shared his assessment of DPRK's nuclear and WMD threat, and asked for Canada's continued unwavering support of the ROK government's DPRK policy. Additionally, the Chairman conveyed his gratitude for Canada's implementation of sanctions against the DPRK greatly contributing to stability and the establishment of peace in the Indo-Pacific. ○ Canada is a key partner and a friendly nation of the Republic of Korea that sent approximately 27,000 troops during the Korean War, the third most following the United States and United Kingdom. General Wayne Eyre is a notable Korea expert, having served as the Deputy Commander of the United Nations Command from 2018 to 2019, and continues to maintain a special relationship with Korea. Meanwhile, General Eyre's visit to Korea was the second in 20 years since 2003 for Canada's Chief of Defence Staff.

○ Chairman Kim Seung Kyum met with Army General Carsten Breuer, the first German Inspector General of the Armed Forces to visit the Republic of Korea, and shared their assessments of the security landscape in the Korean Peninsula and discussed ways to promote military cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. ○ The two Chiefs of Defense concurred that the Republic of Korea and Germany have for long sustained close cooperation in various fields as countries sharing universal values of liberal democracy, and that the two countries should further expand the scope of bilateral cooperation for the stability of the Indo-Pacific region. ○ Chairman Kim conveyed his gratitude for Germany and the international society's resolute implementation of sanctions against the DPRK contributing to peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula, and asked for continued unwavering support of the ROK government's DPRK policy and efforts to establish peace in the peninsula. ○ Furthermore, the two senior military leaders voiced their concerns over the prolonged War in Ukraine, and agreed to join efforts for the stability of Europe and world peace as two countries sharing common values. ○ Germany dispatched a medical assistance team treating approximately 300,000 patients, thereby contributing to Korea's post-war reconstruction. Various military exchange and cooperation have flourished and are on-going between the Republic of Korea and Germany. Today's office call marked the first ever military exchange between the two countries' Chiefs of Defense and is expected to deepen and expand military exchange and cooperation between the ROK JCS and the German Defence Staff.

○ Chairman Kim Seung Kyum hosted Air Force General Micael Bydén, the Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces during his first ever visit to the Republic of Korea and the ROK JCS to discuss the security landscape in Europe and the Indo-Pacific, including the Korean Peninsula, and ways to strengthen bilateral military cooperation. ○ Chairman Kim and General Bydén concurred that "the series of military provocations by DPRK are clear violations of UN Security Council resolutions, and pose grave threats to not only the Korean Peninsula but also the international society's security environment at large." Chairman Kim asked General Bydén for Sweden's participation in and support of the international society's efforts for DPRK's complete denuclearization, such as sanctions. ○ Chairman Kim and General Bydén voiced their concerns over the continuation of the War in Ukraine. Moreover, the two leaders agreed that the Republic of Korea and Sweden, along with the international society, should support the establishment of peace and stability in Ukraine and Europe, and to expand cooperation in national defense and the defense industry. ○ Sweden dispatched a field hospital unit and approximately 1,100 medical personnel during the Korean War, and has sent observers to the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission after the armistice, thereby contributing to peace in the Korean Peninsula. Today's office call served as the second military exchange between the two chiefs of defense since 2015.
