Authority to command and supervise operations forces and joint forces

Advice for the President, NSC and the Minister of National Defense
  • The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff serves as the highest military advisor for the Minister of National Defense as part of military command assistance National Armed Forces Organization Act Article 9), executes advisor functions on military matters through participation in NSC in accordance with National Security Council Act.
Fulfillment of obligations as Director of Integrated Defense Headquarters
  • The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff executes actions in order to unify and employ national defense elements, subscribing to the concept of total national war against enemy infiltration, provocation, or threats. (Integrated Defense Act Artile 8)
Execution of duty as Martial Law Commander in obedience to orders
  • The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff executes actions as martial law commander on order when general government agency is limited/unable to secure public social order due to national emergency equivalent to warfare and such.
Others
  • In the event that there isn't enough time to receive defense sea area designation from the President due to exigent reason pertaining to military operation, the Chairman of the Joint chiefs of staff may temporarily designate the area. (Defense Sea Area Act Artile 3 Clause 1)
