GEN Lee, Sun Jin, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and GEN Curtis Scaparrotti, Commander of the Combined Forces Command visited the Air Force Operations Command and the 7th Air Force in Osan, Gyunggido, to check the readiness posture capability of the ROK-US combined forces. The purpose of GEN Lee and GEN Scaparrotti’s visit to the ROK-US Air Force unit was to conduct a close inspection of combined defense posture in connection with the deployment of the B-52 long-range bomber, a core strategic asset of the United States Armed Forces. GEN Lee and GEN Scaparrotti received a brief on the air surveillance and readiness posture of the ROK and US Air Forces from Lt Gen Lee, Wang Geun, Command of the AFOC, and Lt Gen Terrence O’Shaughnessy, Commander of the 7AF, and inspected the ROK and US combat air units’ provocation deterrence and response capability. GEN Lee emphasized, “There is a very high probability that north Korea may conduct additional surprise provocation to overcome the current situation, and thus our forces must converge all our capabilities into maintaining the firm all-round readiness posture to deter additional provocation and maintain peace and stability. Over the radio, GEN Lee told Capt Jung, Yong Min, who was leading an FTX as the mission commander, “If the enemy conducts provocation, we must respond in a swift, accurate, and firm manner. If there is an attack order, carry out your mission impeccably and make the enemy tremble in fear. Capt Jung replied, “If the enemy conducts provocation, we will make them deeply regret it.” and expressed his strong resolve to firmly respond. The package consists of approximately 10 fighters including one F-15K flight and F-16, KF-16, and F-4E. The exercise includes eliminating enemy radar and anti-aircraft network as well as precision strike against key ground targets. GEN Scaparrotti stated, “we need to predict what provocation north Korea will conduct next and respond as one powerful team. As we have a combined exercise coming up, maintain the utmost readiness posture in a far-sighted manner. GEN Lee and GEN Scaparrotti visited the Korea Air and Space Operations Center (KAOC) and Korea Theater Missile Operations Cell (KTMO Cell). KAOC identifies and takes actions regarding the aircraft that enter the sky above the Korean Peninsula and serves as the leadership for ROK-US combined air operations during wartime.
